Lagos · August 2026 · fuel /L

Four cars.
One salary.

Head-to-head cost of ownership: the Land Cruiser being driven, the Accord that should replace it, and the two Highlanders tempting from the lot.

The number that matters

Fuel + maintenance, monthly

Maintenance is an averaged monthly figure: routine service, brakes, and the suspension work Lagos roads guarantee. Hybrid includes a reserve for battery/inverter risk.

Day-to-day parts

What the legs actually cost

Lagos aftermarket estimates, parts + labour. This is the "working the legs" people warn about — priced.

Performance

0–60 mph & top speed

The surprise: the hybrid is the quickest car here. Electric torque off the line.

Lagos practicality

Ground clearance vs the flood line

Reference lines: a 2015 Sienna (166 mm) and a typical badly-flooded Lagos street (~160 mm at the axle). The Accord sits below both — route discipline in rainy season is part of the deal.

Exit plan

Value retained after 3 years

Real terms (USD-equivalent), assuming the car is kept in sellable condition. Naira prices will look higher regardless — that's inflation, not appreciation.

What most buyers miss

The questions nobody asks

Insurance. Comprehensive runs ~4–5% of value/year: ~₦400–450k on a ₦9M Accord, ~₦550–650k on a ₦12M Highlander. Third-party only ≈ ₦15–20k. Budget it.
Flood wading. One deep pothole-lake into a sedan's intake is a bent-rod engine. Rainy season = route discipline — or follow the danfos, they know the depth.
Theft profile. 8th-gen Accords and Highlanders are both steal-to-order targets. A tracker (₦60–100k installed + subscription) is not optional at this value.
Cabin & cargo. The Accord's ~396 L boot handles airport runs and school pickups; the Highlander's third row is its only real edge.
Mechanic pool. Accord / petrol Highlander: any good mechanic. Highlander Hybrid: a handful of specialists. LC: everyone can work on it — at LC parts prices.
Papers. Change of ownership, roadworthiness, plates: budget ~₦80–150k on any purchase, on top of the sticker.
